Store water before you shop for a filter

Turn a gallon target into a water supply your household can actually store, carry, and use.

Start with the amount, then solve the storage problem

CDC recommends at least one gallon per person per day for three days and, when possible, a two-week supply. Heat, illness, pregnancy, and pets can increase needs. Those are starting amounts, not a ceiling. Four people at one gallon each need 12 gallons for three days or 56 gallons for two weeks. Our calculator lets you adjust the timeframe and adds your pet and climate allowances.

Count what is already usable

Walk through your storage areas and count only water that is ready to use. An empty container is future capacity, not stored water. Write down each container’s capacity and location. Subtract your usable supply from the plan before buying more. For example, a 12-gallon goal with eight gallons already stored leaves a four-gallon gap; it does not require a whole new kit.

Make the containers manageable

Water weighs about 8.3 pounds per US gallon. A seven-gallon fill adds about 58 pounds before the container’s weight. A larger container may reduce the number of pieces you own, but smaller containers may be easier to move or pour. Check the intended shelf or floor location and the manufacturer’s stacking instructions. Try handling a filled container before committing to several of the same size.

Keep storage and treatment separate

Use food-grade containers, keep them away from chemicals and heat, and follow CDC’s cleaning and filling instructions. Date self-filled water and replace it every six months. A filter is a separate backup tool: its ability to address one hazard does not make every water source suitable. Follow local advisories if your normal supply is affected. For longer plans, identify a realistic safe resupply source as well as storage space.

Your next steps

  • Record gallons already stored, not empty-container capacity.
  • Choose containers you can move and dispense from.
  • Label self-filled water and schedule its replacement.
  • Keep a separate plan for a safe replacement supply.
