Make a grab list you can use under pressure
Separate what stays at home from what you can take when you need to leave.
A home supply and an evacuation bag solve different problems
The Red Cross distinguishes a three-day evacuation supply from a two-week home supply. That does not mean every item in a home stockpile belongs in a backpack. Think about the transport you actually have, who can carry what, and the people or animals who need assistance. Do not let a packing target delay following an evacuation order.
Divide your list by where the item lives
Make three groups: packed now, collected at departure, and already in the vehicle. The departure group might include everyday medication, a phone, or frequently used documents. Give each item a precise location and assign a person to collect it. “Important papers” is easy to overlook; “document pouch in the hall cabinet” is something another household member can locate.
Plan for a destination, not just a direction
Identify potential places you could go, verify their suitability, and record contact details offline. Account for pets, mobility needs, and any equipment that requires power. Keep more than one travel option in mind, but follow current official route and closure instructions during an event. If you depend on someone else for transport, discuss the arrangement ahead of time and have a backup contact.
Rehearse without creating an emergency
On an ordinary day, use the list to gather the items and assess the load. Check that bags, carriers, mobility aids, and necessary passengers fit together. Notice which steps depend on a single person knowing where something is. Remove unnecessary duplicates, label shared supplies, and move frequently forgotten items to a better location. The goal is a workable departure process, not winning a packing-speed contest.
Your next steps
- Separate packed items from departure-time items.
- Assign help for people and pets who need it.
- Record destination and transportation contacts.
- Check the load and review local evacuation guidance.
