Make a family communication plan that works offline
A shared contact card can be more useful than another app nobody has configured.
Decide what a useful message contains
A check-in should make it easy for the recipient to understand your situation. Agree on a simple pattern: who is with you, your location, whether you are safe, and your intended next step. Avoid ambiguous messages such as “we left” when several people may be leaving different places. Practice with a clearly labeled test message during ordinary conditions.
Choose contacts and meeting places
CDC recommends an emergency action plan with important numbers, at least two meeting places, and multiple ways to communicate with household members and an out-of-town contact. Choose places that make sense for your circumstances and discuss when each would be used. Confirm that the contact person agrees to help rather than simply adding a name to a form.
Keep a paper copy where it can be found
Make a small card with essential numbers, meeting places, and agreed check-in steps. Keep copies in relevant bags and share them with the people who need the plan. Protect private information; there is no reason to publish family contacts on a public website. The Offgrid Family calculator does not need names, addresses, or phone numbers to estimate supplies.
Separate alerts from family messages
Know how local authorities distribute warnings and sign up through their official channels. A charged phone is helpful, but mobile service and home internet can fail. Consider a suitable battery-backed weather radio and learn its controls before relying on it. A radio receives information; it does not necessarily let you contact family. Review your communication plan when a phone number, school arrangement, caregiver, or regular travel pattern changes.
Your next steps
- Agree on a short check-in message format.
- Confirm an out-of-town contact and meeting places.
- Put essential contact details on paper.
- Test official alert sources and backup power.
